Contemporary Elizabethan Visuals

Kirsty Mitchell 

Kirsty Mitchell created this wonderland series after the death of her mother. Her mother was an English teacher who was never seen without a book or writing in diaries. This gave Kirsty the idea to create this series of photographs called, Wonderland. These images have Elizabethan references in them by the styling, makeup and props. 

In this image you can see with the props they are a reference to the Spanish Armada. The queen character in these pictures is titled as the 'The White Queen' which could be a reference to Queen Elizabeth I and her being 'The Virgin Queen' as white is a virginal colour.

In this image you can see the make up is a very contemporary version of Elizabethan make up. The hair is also very contemporary with the curls and the padding style. Overall these images are very powerful and I can really see the Elizabethan similarities.

With these images by Kararzyna Konieczka you can see the Elizabethan features with the hair. It is big (padding, curling). The make up is kept very plain which is another Elizabethan theme. Although her work is very strange and out of the ordinary I can see how this could link back to the Elizabethans.

I can see the Elizabethan references through this image. The white is a big colour that comes up a lot in Elizabethan portraits and I have also noticed this colour is used a lot in contemporary Elizabethan images as well.

This is a collection designed by Alexander McQueen's label after he passed away. This is the collection where I see the most Elizabethan references because of all the gold and the luxurious materials. Also the head piece really interests me because it is like a modern version of a Elizabethan hair piece except it goes over the whole face. With the ruffles around the neck it screams Elizabethan to me.

This image is actually based off 'The birds' by Alfred Hitchcock but I can see a contemporary Elizabethan feel with the make up in this look. The blocked out eyebrow look, the lips being red and the pale/white skin.

Val Garland

Val Garland is a make up artist working in London. She is originally from Bristol but immigrated to Australia to work as a hair colorist. This is where her love for colour came from and her interest for make up.  

She moved back to London and started working with people like Alexander McQueen and Kate Moss on publications like Vogue and i-D. She is now a fully established make up artist.

Ellis Faas

Ellis Faas was called one of the most influential make up artists of her time according to Vogue Magazine. She has worked for big brands like L'Oreal, Lancome and Mac cosmetics. When her contract with L'Oreal was up in 2007 she then could go on to make her own line of cosmetics using her own name. Originally from the Netherlands, she had a good eye for fashion and grew up designing and making her own fashions. She also developed a love photography and actually went on to become a fashion, portrait and beauty photographer at the beginning of her career. She would use herself for her photography finally finding her love for make up after creating different looks. She made big decision and left photography behind and moved on to her real passion which was make up.

After training at different schools, one being in Paris, she moved back to the Netherlands and pursued a career free lancing for films and fashion magazines. In 1999 Ellis was scouted out by Vogue and then before she knew it she was travelling to London, Paris and New York being in charge of army's of make up artists for fashion shows. She was then introduced to Karl Lagerfeld and applying make up for Fendi and Chanel.

You could say this woman has achieved a lot and has done very well in her career as a make up artist. 

She now has her own brand called Ellis Faas which is a high end make up brand. Which you can purchase world wide.

Carina Buckley Analytical Review - The Danger Dress

To look at this in an analytical way I would say that from the small paragraph left at the end of this post, that this model from this shoot is not body conscious. I can see why this is called the danger dress. Technically speaking in fashion white is a revealing colour, it tends not to be the most flattering on most shapes and with the slit featured on the side of this dress you can say it is quite revealing. But on this model she actually makes it look sporty not sexy. I think with the pumps as well it does look very sporty and casual. 

You can also understand why its called this from what is written on the wall behind the model. The natural sunlight hitting these images is beautiful and you can tell the sun is about to set which I think gives a really artistic feel to these pictures. 

I would say the writer of this blog could have explained these images better and clearer. 

Drawing & Sketching

Now I know drawing is not my strong point but I am willing to learn. This lesson reminded me of just how awful I actually am (face palm) but still I carried on with it.

I got myself an A3 sketch pad and a set of drawing pencils and began to listen to what Kat instructed. We started with the history of drawing and pencil hardness. We then began to draw different lines, vertical, horizontal and diagonal. We then drew circles and triangles. We were then instructed to draw 3D shapes instead of 2D which I found difficult. Kat explained its all about practice and you really have to pay attention and just keep practicing and practicing and you will get better.

I realised that being able to draw is a key skill make up artists should have so I will just keep practicing and hopefully I will be able to do this one day.

HALLOWEEN TIME AT SOLENT!

For Halloween at uni, we had the chance to recreate day of the dead make up in Sue's class. This lesson was a lot of fun and at the end Sue would critique us on our application ability. We only had 40 minutes to recreate our look and with that time I am very happy.I wasn't even half way through what I wanted to complete but I was still happy about my Contour and blending skills. I used supra colour and aqua colour from Kryolan for the majority of this look and I think they are two products you have to get the consistency right to achieve the best coverage which i think I managed to do with this application. 

Sue was very happy with what I had achieved within the time frame, but we both agreed I could have done a little bit more accuracy around the eyes and lips. 

HALLOWEEN SELFIE WITH JAMIE!

This was a very fun lesson and I enjoyed trying something different from our normal lessons.

Kevyn Aucoin was considered the first celebrity make up artist and probably one of the best. He had clients such as Cindy Crawford Julia Roberts, Cher and Naomi Campbell. He was responsible for many of the 90's trends such as matte nude lips, arched brows and lip liner. He wrote books and made tutorials on how to create make up looks such as Courtney Loves smudged grunge look. He worked with brands like Revlon before starting his own brand under his own name, Kevyn Aucoin in 2001.

His life took a downward spiral in 2002 when he sadly passed away from kidney and liver failure due to prescription drugs he was taking for a tumor he had gone most of his life without knowing about.
